The ICRU is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Charles (“Chuck”) Mistretta, recipient of the ICRU Gray Medal in 2017, who died on June 9, 2026.

Dr. Mistretta was a remarkable scientist and a pioneer in the development of innovative medical imaging techniques, including digital subtraction angiography and, later, magnetic resonance angiography. His groundbreaking contributions to medical imaging were recognized with numerous prestigious awards and honors. He was Professor Emeritus of Medical Physics, Radiology, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
