The International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) is a standardization body established in 1925 with the mission to develop concepts, definitions, and recommendations for quantities and units related to ionizing radiation and its interactions with matter, particularly concerning biological effects. Operating as a sister organization to the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the ICRU plays a pivotal role in defining radiation measurement standards globally. One of the focuses of ICRU reports is on prescribing, recording and reporting radiation treatments.
Role and Responsibilities of ICRU Commissioners:
The ICRU is currently comprised of 15 Commissioners. Their principal activities are:
- Report Sponsorship: Commissioners lead the development of ICRU reports by assembling and guiding appropriate Report Committees to address specific topics within their expertise.
- Active Participation: They contribute to and provide critical feedback on ongoing ICRU reports, ensuring scientific rigor, relevance and consistency with ICRU policy and guidelines.
- Strategic Planning: Commissioners propose new areas that would benefit from ICRU reports, steering the Commission’s focus towards emerging challenges and advancements in radiation science.
- Annual Meetings: They attend a week-long annual meeting each October, collaborating with fellow Commissioners to discuss progress, set priorities, and align on strategic directions.
Each Commissioner serves a 12-year term, providing continuity and long-term vision to the Commission’s work.
Current Opportunities:
Positions are now open for Commissioners in three scientific domains:
